He was born on 31 January 1797 in the Viennese suburb of Himmelpfortgrund. He never died. His resume doesn’t contain any major events. His biography was his music and music was his life. He had a very complex personality. On one hand he was cheerful, sociable, loving life and all its charms. My best friend – that is how everyone described him. A modest Viennese composer who wrote of himself: “I lead a very simple life, I often go for long walks, I work a lot and read Walter Scott”. But because he was an artist and had the soul of a poet, he often felt nothing but chagrin and melancholy. In his diary, he observed: “No one feels another's grief, no one understands another's joy. People imagine that they can reach one another. In reality they only pass each other by”. He felt lonely even among his friends. Andreas Schiff once said:
If I were a Catholic
Bach would be the God,
Mozart the Son
and Schubert the Holy Ghost.
